Now we are all hoping for bright skies and dry days but PLEASE think of being ready in case it does rain. I walked in total rain a couple of years ago (that dreaded Sunday) and have now ridden in rain/cold for both the Ride to Conquer Cancer and the Ride for Heart.
Once you get wet you start getting cold, which is the worse energy zapper.
Two years ago it was so wet on the Sunday that lunch was standing under a tree for 5 minutes before giving up and walking on. If it does rain, even for a bit it will made the ground wet for the day. Think about bringing something to put between you and the wet ground so you can sit for a few minutes at lunch or stops. Something as simple as a plastic grocery bag or a dollar store plastic drop cloth...both easy and light to carry and so useful!
If you are going to carry an umbrella, PLEASE be careful. It is so easy to poke someone in the eye while trying to manouver around with it. A hat (even if you are not a hat person) is great to keep the water off your face and to help keep your poncho hood on your head.
Also, think about an extra set of dry/warm clothes....at the finish line. Leave them in your car, ask your family to bring them. There is nothing worse then sitting around in wet cold clothes...or trying to dig through your bag for something dry to put on.
I think if we all come prepared it will help ensure that it will not actually rain!
Have a great weekend Walkers...we will see you out there!

Good ideas. Definitely consider something other than an umbrella. They are awkward and can be very dangerous, especially in large numbers. Until then, keep repeating this mantra. . . It will not rain. It will not rain. It will not rain.
Excellent advice. I walked in that rain - it wasn't fun. Good idea about something to sit on - I sewed a lined table cloth and a blanket (both from the Dollar store) together and now have a waterproof side and soft sided blanket to sit on (or put over my head).
Just checked the weather forecast and they are predicting two hours of rain overnight on Saturday. So, for all you tenters remember to put your stuff in a plastic bag.

Also for those that take the mylar silver blankets on Sunday mornings. Please do not throw out if you are warmed up, you never know if you might need it again. The really fold up small. Maybe also I will talk to my fellow sweep crew and maybe you can give them to us. It is such a waste to see them thrown out. I still have mine from 3years ago, they are not cheap to replace all the time.
what good advise , everyone. I just found and packed one of the dollar store tablecloths and the idea of dry clothes in your car for the closing ceremonies is excellent. I will be getting that done next. I can't believe it's just about here. Woo Hoo!
I already have made room for a couple of extra pairs of socks in my pack for Sunday. I too was in that rain 2 years ago. They may not stay dry for long but fresh dry socks can make life a lot better. Just remember to pack stuff in your fanny pack or bag in a plastic bag as well. I learned this lesson last weekend, as my rain coat doesnot cover both my fanny and my fanny pack. But all the planning should guaratee there is no rain.
I totally remember trying to 'dry' my hair before closing ceremonies with paper towel from the washrooms that Sunday....was trying anything to get warm. I made the mistake of pulling my finishing shirt overtop my wet clothes when I got to closing....and it was immediately soaked! Fingers crossed that if we do get the dreaded R it is a slight drizzle and then moves off.
Also should have mentioned a seal-able bag (zip lock) for your cell phone, etc. I literally had water pouring out of mine after the Ride for Heart AND I had it inside my waterproof coat. There is just some rain that gets everywhere!
Tenters - put your Sunday clothes inside your sleeping bag with you on Saturday night....they will be toasty warm and dry when you need them on Sunday morning. I once got dressed inside my sleeping bag when it was way chilly out!

My daughter Noreen and I are taking some pink (or purple) clothes pins to clip the poncho in place (IF we need it). One under the chin to hold the hood tighter and one at each "arm hole" so we aren't fishing around trying to find our arms and hopefully it won't blow open at the sides.
Good luck everyone.

2011 in Ottawa in June was a successful 2 day, 60km Walk for Noreen and I. Whoohoo!!! See you in 2012!
Excellent idea about the clothes pins - I'll add that to my list.
Two years ago I would have given one of my kidneys for one of those mylar blankets. I ended up asking one of the crew for a green garbage bag and wore that for the 2nd half of the day (over my wet coat, shirt, bra, shorts and underwear)!

When you mentioned the tarp, I got a chuckle. I took a tarp with me a couple of years ago, and we put it over the tent because we thought it might rain. Well, I was awake all night....listening to that *^^% tarp crackling in the wind....and worrying that the wind would catch it and blow it off into someone elses tent. One sleepless night, and we never did have rain!
Clothes pin idea is excellent. Also good to help hold tarp or plastic over your tent in case it does do that thing we don't talk about. I'll also bring something to sit on for lunch and pit stops in case of . . . Only one more sleep!!!
As of this moment in time Accuweather is predicting excellent temperatures (60-70F) over the weekend and only a chance of rain overnight on Saturday (around 4am). So, keep your fingers crossed - the gods seem to be smiling on us this year.
That dreaded Sunday!! It was horrible two years ago, as you mentioned, trying to eat a soggy sandwhich in the rain. lol I hadn't thought of the hat over the rain poncho hood that year, so my arm was completely drenched from hold my hood on. I now have a hat packed for this year!! Hopefully it'll at least not rain during lunch eating. lol
