I not certain I am finding all the info I need on the site, has anyone seen a route map as yet? Or does anyone know where some of the cheering areas are? If I have my husband or friends wanting to cheer us on - where do they go? Do they allow your spouse to meet with you for end of day ceremonies or dinner on the first day? 1st Time 2-day walker!
They don't publish the route as things can change. They will send out the cheering station locations where people can meet you at. They should be published next week, or you can call the office to find out where they are this year. I'm told the route is completely changed from years past. For sure your spouse can meet you at the end of the first day, although, I don't think they can get dinner as they won't have the creditials to get any. But they can join in the fun of the evening entertainment. You want them there at the finish to cheer you in, and without a doubt they will want to be at closing ceremonies. This is my 8th year walking, and you're in for a life changing experience!! Take it all in, it's not a race, get to know the walkers next to you, and enjoy the moments as there will be lots of them.
A completely new route... what a novel idea. Although I guess we still end up at Downsview, so we still have that hot stretch with not a lot of foliage near the end. And I can't imagine they'd give up that street - King (?) that has the amazing supporters on it.
That's what I don't understand, how do the homes that decorate and do all those amazing things for us know where we are going to be walking when we don't? I too hope they don't change it so much that we miss that fantastic home with the beer shots :o)
All the homes along the route get a letter from WEWC telling that the walkers are coming thier way. Remember all those pink ribbons in past years on the trees? They were sent with the letter for people to put up.
From what I've heard so far, that fabulous street at the end of day 1 will now be at the beginning of day 2. But please don't quote me as I could be wrong. and yes, camp is still at Downsview.
A brand new route. This year, Weekend Walkers will experience a new route through some beautiful neighborhoods of Toronto that have never before been walked before. Surprises provided by a group of Volunteers charged to keep you happy along the way!
It sounds like its going to be very exciting! I am really looking forward to serving as a Crew member out on the route this year... it will be exciting to watch the Walkers that we are accompanying experience all of the fun things that the different Crew teams are preparing for them (at the different Pit stops and at various points along the way).
Is there really a home with shots?? Wow!!
Carolyn

If there's anyone in the know here... I'd love to know the lunch spots each of the two days. My family meets me there rather than the cheering stations since we stop for longer.
Yes, Carolyn. It is true. There are homes that serve us with shots, beer and last year there was a very sweet old woman who served us a very invigorating shot of cold espresso! She was a real sweetheart, and sure was in the right place at the right time for me in that heat on the first day. The man with the pressure sprayer was great too. His house was on the other side of the street from where we were walking, but he just had the hose stretched across the road and provided us with a much needed cool shower. The generosity and caring of some people in the neighbourhoods we walk through continues to amaze me. Can hardly wait for the weekend to be here!! 10 more sleeps!
Wow Doreen - it sounds so amazing! Looking forward to seeing it all enfold.

I remember the home with the hose, that was so wonderful! Some people are out in full force with cookies, cut up friut, water, freezies - it is amazing. Lots decorate their homes, kids and pets. We had little girls doing cheers for us, survivors standing with signs thanking us for walking. It is the most awesome (and I use the word the old fashioned way) experience!
Definitely a life changing experience, at least it was for me. That's why I keep coming back. I'm sad that this will be my last walk for a while as I have other obligations for the same weekend for the next couple of years. So, I am not going to think of the sad things, I am going to focus on the positive. . . and I am positive that this years walk is going to be GREAT!!!! Rain or shine, heat or cold, I'm ready!
Just found out that my neighbor Emily won't be serving expresso this year as the route has changed and we won't be walking through my neighborhood this year. Its the reason I signed up for the event - didn't just want to cheer the ladies on...wanted to take part too. I'll have to let her know, but I wonder about all those homes who go the extra mile (as my family and my neighbor now have for four years now ...cheering on walkers and celebrating the day. My kids will be disappointed - we won't be decorating the house in pink balloons and ribbon this year. All that said I am looking forward to the new route - just praying it's mostly flat instead of uphill towards downsview. And wondering about the cheering stations - THREE of them are at Shoppers - won't that create congestion with all those friends and families present. I hope the stores' clerks at those locations are good with young children as many do come out to cheer for us. Mine usually wait under a shady tree....guess they'll be better off in an air conditioned store.
Hope everyone is healthy and excited about the new adventure we are all about to experience - I certainly am!
Keep an eye out for the pit stops or lunch because this is another good time to meet up with the family because you are also taking a break at this time. This way the kids will also get to see what goes on during the walk.
How do you know the route is reversed? How does this route information get out - I'd love to see an actual map. Does that mean walking uphill all day on Saturday? It's gentle but it's just a wee bit tougher.

According to the cheering stations, we're passing Princess Margaret on Day 1. We usually pass it on the end of Day 2.... (that's why the previous post is saying that the route is reversed).
Yeah, last year we went west day 1, and east day 2. Based on where the cheering stations are, we must be going east day 1 and west day 2.
I put the cheering stations and the 1 pit stop we know about on a google map. If anyone knows any more pit stop or grab n' go or lunch locations, let me know and I'll add 'em!
Haha, I just did the same thing - I guess I am not the only eager beaver in the group You could add Downsview Park - friends and family can meet us there as well.

Funny...some think the route is reversed, but it actually has gone back to where it started, In the first few years of the walk, (I've been doing this since the first walk 8 years ago) we did go east, and walked past PMH on the Sat morning, then headed off more east, and had lunch at Sunnybrook park, and then west over to Downview.
Going east first makes for a little bit squishy walking in the beginning, until we all find our pace and spread out. At least that is what I remember about it. But, it is a new year and a new route. Who knows what excitement and surprises that holds in store for us?!! Where we walk also depends on what other events are going on at the same time. Last year I remember running into (not literally) a lot of runners. Was it an early Terry Fox run perhaps? And other groups can book the parks where we might walk also. I guess changing the route is one of the things that helps keep it fresh for the return walkers. Only 3 more sleeps!
The Terry Fox run is not an issue this year as it is to be held the following weekend. This is supposed to be an all new route to help change things up, to give other homes in Toronto and sub areas the chance to take part and also to help the crew keep an eye on those that are the "super" walkers and knew the route so well that they were even ahead of the crew last year which is a safety problem. Remember everyone it is a WALK, no running and most importantly this is NOT A RACE, please enjoy all the other walkers and have a good time at the pit and grab and go stops. Good luck to all it will be a great weekend as always!!
You are all smart Cookies! I did the same detective work reading the cheering stations. LOL
I'm a 5th year member now. Walked first two and this is now my third year crewing. In fact, I'm in the Sweep Van Crew this year (Look for the ZooMobile) and I dont' have route maps yet. So it's not like they are keeping it from walkers on purpose. It's very tedious work and only just the other night did my Sweep Captain possibly drove the route.
Sometimes things even change the day before due to construction etc. But I'm with you all in looking forward to seeing the different areas of Toronto we haven't seen and look forward to new fresh cheering from new neighbourhoods.
Look out the ZOO is on its way!!!!!!! LOL

I am also from Ajax. I am walking alone because my walking partner did not raise the funds and has decided to not walk. This is my first time walking and am looking forward to the event and can't wait to witness the event first hand. I am only doing the one day but have signed up for next year and want to do the two days.
Good for you for still doing the walk. If you look at one of the other posts - can't remember which one it is - there is a group of single walkers that are getting together to support each other through the day(s). Contact them if you are interested.
Katybear there are quite a few walkers and crew members that come from the Ajax area just check out the posts there are a few there. I am also from Ajax but this year I am crewing with my sister in sweep "A Cure at the End of the Rainbow".
Hi Katybear. There is indeed a group of us "single " walkers pledging to walk together . Meet us at the "A" truck or the #1 truck, whichever id they are using at 7:30 am . Look for a pink sign that will say the tagalongs, and just come and join us. Ok? see ya there. Jodi (p.s. my name amongst others will be on the pink sign
Thank you so much Jodi, my name is Kandi and I will definitely meet you there. I am so excited for this. See you on Saturday and I look forward to meeting lots of new friends along the way.
They don't post the route map until AFTER the walk is done, so you can see where you did go. As people are saying above, you need to kind of connect the dots with the places that we do know (the cheering stations, Downsview Park etc). I think it makes it a bit more exciting to not know exactly where we're going.
