food intolerances/allergies

Just wondering .... I know that meals can be geared towards vegetarians, I have been told that those with gluten/wheat intolerances must provide their own food - anyone with suggestions as to how this can be done/what foods might survive the weekend transportation?

Donna, I would call the office - at the Ride in June I heard of people with dietary restrictions were able to put a cooler in the lunch truck...and it was transported for them. Not sure if this is the case but it might be worth the call

Good luck

I would definitely call the office... putting a cooler into one of the trucks that is headed to the lunch pit stop would certainly seem like a reasonable option.

I have allergies myself (a very bad one to peanuts and a milder one to tree nuts), so I pack peanut free cereal bars and nut free trail mix. I can eat the fruit (uncut... just to be safe) and veggies at the pit stops. I'm also ok with the pretzels, but that's about it. Lunch is usually ok, I just can't eat the dessert, but I don't find that to be a problem. Dinner is the same... the main is ok... I avoid the dessert and the peanut butter sandwitches that were also on offer this year. So, maybe you can pack some essentials and augment that with things that they offer that you are able to eat.

You should be able to pack a cooler in the luggage truck (along with your other gear), so that would give you some addition dinner choices. I pack extra things in my luggage to replenish my supply for Day 2, but with my type of allergy, fortunately I'm not needing to pack any perishables.

im sure any of the sweep vehicles would be happy to transport a small cooler if you need it as well - they are on the route and at the pit stops so might work???? i know they help the crew along the way with water and snacks since we often have to miss pit stops and even lunch sometimes

Thank you so much - everyone! It's amazing the support that is involved with the walk .....both crew & walkers! I still have to decide how to go about packing perishables .... will certainly keep all options in mind! Don't be surprised if I stop in and visit you on the sweep teams!! Looking forward to another fun year!

Just let me know Donna, it will not be a problem to carry a small cooler for you or even add to the large one that we have on board for water and juice.
