So... for those of you who are signing up for Crew... which team did you get assigned to?
I was assigned to Team 2011. For the second year running I have ended up with my #3 choice... I'm wondering if the secret to getting my #1 or #2 choice might be to put down no #3 option
To be honest, I actually thought of doing that but was scared I would get assigned to the team that has to lug the big water bottles...
Anyway, I am truthfully looking forward to the big weekend no matter what Crew Team I am on... it is just awesome to be there and be helping the Walkers the same way that the awesome Crew members for the Ride to Conquer Cancer help out Riders like me year after year...
I remember last year I was with the Camp Consierge Crew team, and I was helping for a while at the camp medical tent (cutting out moleskin into random shapes and generally looking after the self serve area)... I seriously saw some of the scariest looking blisters I have ever observed in my life! I am super impressed at the ability of the Walkers to keep going even in the face of those blisters... you guys rock!!!

What a supportive post - the walkers couldn't do it without the Crew - You REALLY make a difference, you keep us going and keep our spirits up. Thank You!
Out of curiousity, what were your #1 and 2 pics for crewing? This is my 8th year walking... I think about switching to crewing and never do. Curious what the "dream" crew job is.
From my understanding (and guess), if you've participated in the Walk before, as a crew member, you're more than likely to get the same 'job' or same 'team' as the previous year.
As us walkers know, you see (kind-of) the same pit stop stations each year...this helps with organization with the office (them having less to explain), and with the volunteers (again, already knowing what to do).
In end, it'll help make the event run a lot smoother.
As for the dream crew job - it's up to you. It's what your body and mentality can handle. I personally like pit stops because it's fast paced, it's social and it's fun. Some people don't like to be under that much stress (making sure everything is provided, fast paced etc.). What is a dream job for one person, might be awful for another. :)
I crewed the first two years on what was then called "Camp Services" and has now been changed to Camp Concierge. You get to do a variety of jobs, come fun, some hard, but all rewarding. This would be the dream crew job for me. This will be my 4th time walking, (I think, or maybe my 5th) and believe me, the crews are such an important part of getting us all to the finish line. We couldn't do it without you. CREWS ROCK!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
hi = crew is so important to the walkers (and other crew members too) - im on the motosafety team (4th year) after walking for 3 = and i cant say enough to the other crew who have helped me along the way the last 6 yrs and no doubt again this year
people who feed me - keep me in water and drinks - medical when i needed it and i have a few times - the snacks too!!! :) and the luggage guys who transport my bags - and the ppl that pick up the garbage and put toilet paper in the johnnys- the ppl who help me register for the next year and make sure i get a tshirt that fits - and so much more - many of the crew have less glamerous jobs and maybe not as high profile but so important to the event - motosafety is lucky we have the best job - cheering and meeting all the walkers and getting to ride our bikes too ;)
but every job is just important so if you are crew thanks in advance for all you will do not just for me but for every walker and other crew member and if you are walking please dont forget to say thanks to the crew that do the less exciting jobs so your weekend goes smoothly -
we never get to thank the guys who put up the tents or mark the route or come by after and pick up the garbage - so this is my thanks to those peopel too!!!
so to all the crew along the way thank you from me....motomel :)
oh and just for the record - its much harder work to crew than to walk - believe it or not - its longer days and harder work but just so worthwhile - i have needed medical more times as a crew than when i was a walker - due to heatstroke and stuff like that
when i walked i was in camp by 3 or 5 and in time for dinner - as motosafety we dont hit camp until the last walker is in - and we leave long before the walkers to be on the route in time so the days are longer but i would not trade it for the world :)
I hear you Melanie - I walked for 3 years and last year was my first on crew. I am part of the Caboose Team....we will be on the 'other bikes' AKA bicycles. We as well are on the route before walkers and are back in with the last walkers - but I would not change it for the world.
Last year I heard 'thank yous' all day long, which was awesome, but it also made me more aware of those crew who do not get to be out there with the walkers! I for one will be making sure to pass a few more thank yous along!
See you all out there in a couple of weeks SSM

I got some exciting news from Katie (our Crew Coach) yesterday - I have been switched to the Caboose Team!!! I am so, super, duper happy...
I agree that the "Dream Crew Job" is a highly personal thing. For me, as an avid recreational cyclist, I love the idea of being on my bike all day meeting the needs of the Walkers. I'm not a racer, so I don't have to go fast to enjoy myself on a bike... a short ride with my kids (i.e. 10-15km) is as enjoyable as going out and doing a 50km, 80km or 100km ride with a friend or on my own. So, I am very much looking forward to my duties on my new team
Last year, I was on the Camp Concierge team, which meant that we worked hard to setup things prepare for the arrival of the first Walkers. Spent some time after that waiting impatiently for them to arrive (although that did include giving the massage people some "practice time" on us as a warm-up, which was pretty nice... ). We then worked into the night meeting the needs of the Walkers, which was enjoyable... one of my favorites was manning the "medical self help table"... time flew quickly.... it was soon time to go grab a late shower and hit the sleeping bag. The next morning was an early start (TP replacement in all the porta-potties was the first order of business). Then after all the Walkers were on the route, we spent a few hours packing up the camp, which meant helping to stack all those chairs and tables, packing up every last one of the little blue tents (as they tried to fly away in the wind... they make awesome kites... hehe).
Finally we were done! I had brought my bike to camp (with the permission of Natalia, last year's Crew Coach), so I then departed Camp and road down the route, trying the find where all the Walkers had gotten to. The super efficient Route Cleanup Crew team had already cleared away most of the route markers, so I was following the printed directions, which was an interesting exercise. The pink boa feathers were most helpful for reasurring me that I was on the right roads. I caught up around just past the second pit stop. I then spent an enjoyable couple of hours slowly riding the route, trying to give encourage the Walkers as I passed them.
I must say I really do love the vibe of the route, so I am very much looking forward to spending the entire day performing my Crew duties on the route this year.
