I've never done a walk! So the 2009 walk is MY FIRST!!!

Hi everyone, I'm new to this board and have never done a weekend to end breast cancer walk. But this year is my first! I'm very excited to have my family and friends participate. My mother was diagnosed in October with Invasive Breast Cancer. So I am doing this walk for her. I've been doing my best to get as much info as I can regarding this walk so if there is anything anyone can tell me about it that would be fabulous. I do have a question tho.....I know the walk is all weekend, but is this sleeping over a must? I have a 14 month old baby. Ive seen pictures of all these tents, and wasn't sure if thats what the participants have to do. Any info on that would be appreciated!

Lyndsay

P.S Nice to meet some of you!

smile Welcome to the family Angelic!!  And that's what we all are...one big family with lots of hope and heart!!

There is an absolute wealth of information on the message boards!  Your best start is to go to an orientation.  There is a calender on the endcancer website that lists orientations in all sorts of areas.  This is your best start - there is a video, people to answer your questions and a free tshirt!!  This should set you on the right path!  And you are making the best start by making posts on the message boards.

I regards to sleeping over, that is your choice.  If you live in the GTA you may just want to go home and sleep in your own bed.  Many people do!  I live east of Toronto and make a whole weekend of it; staying downtown Friday night and close to camp on Saturday.  Camp is really fun and an experience many enjoy, but it depends on what you are comfortable with.    Just do what is best for you!  It is a very early start both days so keep that in mind!

Good luck with your fundraising!

Cheryl

Hi Lindsay,
Congrats on deciding to walk this year!! You'll have a great time! I'm sorry to hear about your Mom, and the fight that she has ahead of her.

As Cheryl mentioned, no, you don't have to camp. The first year I wanted to camp, just to get the full experience. After that I wanted to stay in a hotel, but I kept having new teammates each year, that "wanted the full experience" so I've camped every year! The only part I don't like about camping, is trying to get up in the morning, and pack everything up in time to eat and get started. I'm completely NOT a morning person. :)

As Cheryl said too, going to an orientation is the best way to get started, where they'll tell you the main information that you need to know.

The message boards always have people on them that can help answer you're questions, so ask away!!!

It's a lot of work, with raising the money, and doing training walks, but it's well worth it, and always feels like such an accomplishment when you're done.

Hi Lindsay

I'm sure you will find the walk to be a life-changing experience. I have walked since the first one in Toronto and have camped every time except last year, when I had a broken ankle. I must admit that I missed camp, and will be back in a tent this year. It is totally your choice to do what you are comfortable with.

My main hint to you would be to join a team. It makes such a difference to have team mates to walk with and fundraise with. Orientations and training walks are good opportunities to meet walkers and form or join a team.

Thanks girls for welcoming me! I think my best option would be to stay in a hotel. I have a 14 month old little girl and she would keep the campers up all night HAHAHA.

I have to admit I'm a little scared about raising $2000. Although it does not really seem like a lot, its kinda scary. Since I am new to this, I'm trying to think of ideas.

I will be compiling a team of family and friends. What is the limit of people for a group?????

I'm also going to the orientation here in Hamilton on the 31st! Anyone here from Hamilton?

Talk to you all soon!

Hi and Welcome!!!

This is my 6th year - the first 3 as a walker and the last 2 on crew - I am motorcycle safety and you will see me and my team mates along the route several times - and at camp as well - even if you choose not to camp make sure you stay for dinner and some social time with other walkers and the crew - its a great chance to meet people just like you - people dedicated to finding the cure!!

I have camped every year but one - I have a friend who lives right by downsview so one year I stayed at her place and it was a bonus to have a hot bath after a long day but they do take good care of us at camp and the first year I walked my friend Wendy and I laughed about the things we had to do to get a weekend away from our kids ....60 km and camping or stay home with the kids and the 60km won LOL!!!

Either way the Weekend to End Breast Cancer will change your life forever and I look forward to seeing you on the route!! I am the motorcycle crew member with the pink helmet and mohawk on it - you wont be able to miss me - and you will hear all of us - so if there is anything you need between now and then or along the route remember all the crew (and especially the Motorcycle Crew)will be quick to help or assist you in any way!!!

Hey Lindsay...
Welcome to THE WEEKEND TO END BREAST CANCER... YOu are about to embark on the largest LIFE CHANGING EVENT of your life time. I promise you.
Ive been apart of this walk since 2005 in TO and in 2007 I added crewing as SWEEP in Ottawa to my agenda. So this year will be #7 & 8 for me and Im looking forward to both events.
I camped in 2005 & 6, 2007 we stayed @ my daughters as she was walking too. 2008 we camped as it was my best friend and her hubbys first walk so we all wanted to stay at camp...In Ottawa we hoteled it for the 2 nights...and last year I stayed with the Sweep Crew Captain at her home. So yes...it depends on sometimes the situation, your choice ..etc...its NOT mandatory.
Laughing in 2006 I walked just 3 weeks after knee surgery...the knee was great...back hurt from using a cane...sooooooooooo...camping and getting up and down was a tad tricky...lol... and probably should have stayed in a hotel...but we got through it....
Anyway... Yes... its all up to you what you wish to do...but all in all you will have an awesome experience i promise.
hugs and best of luck in your fundraising endevours.
Landis
