Good Morning Walkers, I wanted to share this story with all of you, as I shared it with my team a few months ago...
Those of you that walked in 2008 may remember <<Team Jane>>. They were a highly spirited group of women, walking for their friend, Jane, a young mother and breast cancer survivor. At the closing ceremonies, beautiful and larger than life Jane lead all the Survivors as they marched into the Direct Energy Centre in their pink shirts; she was cradling her sleeping son in her arms. This made my small team of three well-up all at once mostly because Dr. Tak Mak had just talked about how excited he was that treatment of breast cancer had come so far, and that the average post-diagnosis life of survivors had been prolonged to 5 years. I remember the three of us gasping at once, putting our arms around each other, and the tears just flowing and I remember my one girlfriend saying she might not even see that little boy make it to (her son)'s age. Her son was 5 at the time.
My other teammate and sister-in-law sent it to our team a few weeks after the weekend when we were still thinking about and talking about Jane and her team. They raised over $56,000 for the cause last year.
Sadly, Jane lost her battle and passed away on Christmas Day. To my surprise, Jane was from Guelph, my home town, and is a friend of a friend of mine (such a small world my girlfriend was telling me about this girl she knew, Jane, and how she participated in the WTEBC) and I would tell her about the Jane we saw that weekend she just kept saying that really sounds like her but I couldnt imagine she would be gone this quickly. It couldnt be the same Jane she looked so great that weekend, despite having recently undergone chemo and having lost all her hair. She looked so healthy and strong carrying her son in through that roaring crowd and smiling and even laughing through the tears. She was so proud, so energetic and such a Hero.
