Very Sad!

I had received some terrible news and need to share it with my WEBC family.
On facebook, I noticed a bunch of my friends from highschool joined a group called The Power of Positive Thinking.  I clicked and read something horribly sad.  This group was created from a guy I went to highschool with. He is 23 years old and has been fighting a rare form of cancer (on his back) since May.  He thought he'd be done with all this test and treatments (etc. etc.) by Christmas but today, November 13th he was told through a CT scan that his cancer has spread to his lungs.

I am in misbelief.

Oh, Ashley!

That is very sad and our thoughts and prayers go out to him....he is far too young to be fighting such a fight.  Take some consolation from the fact that you are doing what you can to help him and to help others who have to deal with this dreadful disease.

Hi Ashley,

That really sucks. Your friend and his family are in my thoughts and prayers. Just wondering are you participating in the Ride to Conquer Cancer?

I'm so sorry to hear that Ashley!! It just goes to show that cancer can strike anyone, no matter how old they are and what their circumstances are!

Ashley,

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. I know how sad it can be to get news like that.

I've shared with website with other people, and printed it off a few times for friends. I don't know that anyone has actually used the information, but I thought you might like to post the link in the facebook group. It's up to you, but I wanted to at least pass it on to you.

What Cancer Cannot Do

Cancer is so limited

It cannot cripple Love
It cannot shatter Hope
It cannot corrode Faith
It cannot destroy Peace
It cannot kill Friendship
It cannot suppress Memories
It cannot silence Courage
It cannot invade the Soul
It cannot steal eternal Life
It cannot conquer the Spirit

Dear Ashley
I am so very sorry to hear about your friend.
It saddens me beyond imagination to hear about the younger generation having to go through this.
This past July we lost Kryslte to a very rare cancer and being in the room when she passed has opened my eyes more.
Thanksgiving Mon. I had to work at the PlayScape in the wheels inn. Standing there all alone ...cause it was a very quiet night due to the holiday i was feeling a little down trodden...and wallowing in self indulged pity ...when a young couple came in so their lil girls could play in the zig zag ...
Though conversation as her two small daughters and husband played together she and i got to chatting....I discovered that she is 28, and at 26 whe she was pregnant for her two yr old...she was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer.
We talked for quite some time and her cancer has spread to her bones.
Well needless to say that I WAS no longer feeling down about having to be at work...but thinking OK>>>>NOW I REALLY NEED to step up my fundraising.
WE are looking at doin another 60hr Treadmill marathon in May...plus myself and DEBBIE are Shaving our heads in Aug. on the 23rd /09 at T-Bones....just to let you all know...
we are also going to hold a HUGE YARD SALE hopefully all that day and we are booking my nephews band....so ...Hopefully that day will be HUGE Success.
Anyway...my fundraising efforts have been boosted because of this lovely young mom...who bye the way ...had the most AMAZING out look about her life with cancer.
hugs to you Ashley ...I am sending prayers out for your friend.
Landis

Hello there!

I just wanted to comment about the website posted on your last note Noreen.  The information on the site is pretty good but I did find one troubling quote:

"Natural supplements won't hurt you. They can only help. They won't make chemotherapy or radiation therapy less effective.  Instead they amplify the power of whatever cancer treatments you may be doing by attacking cancer in other ways, or supporting the health of the body and immune system."

As a Naturopathic Doctor, I have to tell you that I am very much in favour of natural supplements (obviously), but I want to make sure I let you and anyone who might read this information know that you CAN do harm with natural supplements.  To give a simple example, think about people who have metastasis to the liver -- the liver is needed to break down most medications and supplements that people ingest.  If a liver is already struggling, any additional stress (including breaking down supplements is just that--an additional stress--and this can be very dangerous).  There are numerous other examples, but way too many to detail. Please, please be careful with self-prescribing out there.  I know that naturopathic appointments may seem expensive but the value of knowledge about the right supplements for each individual is, as they say "priceless".

Please feel free to ask me any questions you might have (i.e., anyone reading this) about Naturopathic care.

ps--I'm so sorry for everyone who has struggled with a friend/family member going through cancer -- but please know that our combined positive energy IS making a difference!!!

Hi Doc,

Thank you for posting that. I didn't recall that they had that part in there stating "Natural supplements won't hurt you. They can only help. They won't make chemotherapy or radiation therapy less effective. Instead they amplify the power of whatever cancer treatments you may be doing by attacking cancer in other ways, or supporting the health of the body and immune system." So I'm glad you noticed that and wrote your post.

I had read through it all over 2 years ago, and at the time had clarified that part for my friend, that if she was going to take anything else, to make sure to confirm it with her doctor first. I know that a lot of people don't realize that natural supplements can do harm if you're mixing it with the wrong thing, or sometimes your body just reacts badly to things.

So thanks again for your post! :)

Dearest Ashely:
I am so very sorry to hear about your young friend... everytime I read or talk to someone diagnosed with cancer I shed tears for them and say a silent pray to God in hopes that it will help.
Just recetly after talking to a dear sweet close friend of mine & learning her cancer had returned.... sigh...(so unfair is this damn disease) that I once again shed a few tears , said a prayer for her and then wrote this poem.
Ive actually changed my webpage at the cancer sites here and Ottawa and its now displayed along with my tattoo ...I hop you enjoy this.

'IF I WERE A GENIE'

If I were a Genie
I would not deny
Three wishes to all battling Cancer
I would hear their cry

But a Genie Im not
That I cannot deny
And this sadness I feel
I just cannot let it lie.

So that is why I rise at dawns early light
In hopes that somehow we can erase their cries
For those battling Cancer
I shall never give up the fight.

Sixty kilometers in the cold, heat or rain
Doesnt scare me
But the thought of Cancer knocking on my door
Well that does you see

So this is a pledge of sorts to those whom Ive lost
And to all the survivors as well
We've got to kick CANCER'S butt
And give it hell.

(This is dedicated to each and every one of us! 1 in every 3 families faces Cancer. Lets make it disappear for good. Why do I fundraise all year long in all sorts of weather? Why do I walk 60k in all sorts of weather? Because! Sadly my family, friends, love ones ARE part of that statistic and I am mad as hell!'I proudly wear the Ribbon of Hope & Tribal art wings of Courage tattooed on my lower back as a symbol of my dedication to this cause.)
