Halifax 2009

I was just told by the office that there will not be a Halifax walk in 2009.  We are disappointed to hear this as it was our favourite walk and we were looking forward to going again next year.  cry

That really is bad news.....Wendy and I were hoping to participate in that walk in 2009.  What a shame!  I guess they probably won't look at doing one in another Maritime city.

Oh that's a shame !
I know there will be many more members who will be disappointed in this decision.

Hi,

What is the reason for them cancelling this walk in Halifax?? Was the attendance something to do with this decision??

I know there was a meeting at the end of September with the organizers and the beneficiaries. Let's face it, 625 participants isn't what you might regard as an overwhelming success. There's got to be a break even point, and perhaps they didn't achieve it. The idea is to make money after all!

This was a post on the halifax facebook site.

Unfortunately, you heard correctly through the grapevine of walkers that we will not be conducting The Weekend in 2009 as a fundraiser for the Breast Health Centre. The Weekend was a successful first step for us, and a rewarding and worthwhile launch of our partnership with the IWK Foundation to fund a Breast Health Centre. We are now planning step two (stay tuned!) and it will be more ambitious and aim to draw in other partners in breast cancer advocacy * something we were not able to do with The Weekend to End Breast Cancer and a necessary component of the future Breast Health Centre. We will do our best to keep everyone informed of our next fundraising steps as we build towards a Breast Health Centre and we hope you will stay involved. There is a really interesting article in the October 2008 edition of "More"...for those of you who have not heard of it, it's a "Canadian magazine celebrating women over 40".

The article is called "Where do your pink dollars go?" As well as talking about what portion of your dollars on the purchase of 'pink' items in all the stores really goes to fight cancer,  it has a section in there about the Weekend and the portion of dollars that Brian Pendleton and Causeforce earn from the Walk.  It might explain why the Halifax walk, with only 650 participants, just was not the right venue for this type of event.
